Competitive Event Levels:

  • Level 1 - Members through grade 6-8
  • Level 2 - Members in grades 9 and 10
  • Level 3 - Members in grades 11 and 12

* Event is not intended for a Capstone level course

Mixed Level Teams

  • Team Events with only Level 2 or Level 3 may not include members through grade 8.
  • Team events with only Level 3 may not include members through Grade 10.
  • Events that have all three levels can have a mixed team of any level but must enter at the level of the highest participant member’s grade level.

Culinary Knife Skills (Levels 1, 2, 3, *, ***)
The Culinary Knife Skills event is the new C-STAR Event in CA  that replaces the previous event, Salad Preparation.  When you open the Culinary Knife Skills Event. you will see it listed as a "Skills Demonstration Event". A Skills Demonstration Event is an opportunity at the National Leadership Conference for students to showcase skills in a way different than a STAR Event.  Students do not need to qualify for a Skills Demonstration Event, but will be allowed to sign up to do one at NLC.   In California, we are using this Skills Demonstration Event as a "training ground" for students who are learning knife skills.  It is a C-STAR Event and as such will compete at both Region and State levels of competition.  This opportunity will give students learning knife skills (NOT a student enrolled in a capstone culinary course) to compete in a C-STAR event at both region and state levels, gaining valuable experience in preparation for the National Event.  We are using the rules for this event in our C-STAR event.  The rules say that only three competitors are allowed per chapter; in California,  we are not putting a limit on the  number of students from a single school to compete, but the school must follow the general rule guidelines for the number of competitors allowed from a school.
